# Grandma's Baked Croque-Monsieur

> **30 minutes** and hungry? Baked croque-monsieur is the answer. Bread, ham, gruyère: you almost certainly have all of that in your fridge already. The real advantage here is the **oven**: **four croques at once**, golden, served together. A classic that never fails.

**Total time** : 30 min · **Prep** : 15 min · **Cook** : 15 min · **Servings** : 4 · **Difficulty** : facile

## Ingredients

- 16 slice(s) Sandwich bread
- 8 slice(s) Ham
- 200 g Grated gruyère
- 1 unit Egg
- 3 tbsp Milk
- 1 tbsp Crème fraîche
- Salt
- Pepper

## Method

1. Preheat the oven to **200°C (390°F)** and line your baking tray with **parchment paper**.
2. In a bowl, whisk the egg with the milk and crème fraîche. Season with salt and pepper. **Quickly** dip each slice of bread in the mix, on **both sides**. A quick dip is enough, no need to soak it.
_Tip: Two seconds per side, **that's it**. If your bread starts falling apart in your hand, you've waited too long._
3. Place **8 slices** of bread on the tray. Spread **gruyère** over each one, add a slice of **ham**, then more gruyère. Top with the remaining 8 slices.
4. Sprinkle **gruyère** over the top and bake for **15 minutes** at **200°C (390°F)**. When the cheese is **melted and golden**, it's done. Serve straight from the oven.

## Tips & variations

For extra colour, switch to **grill** mode for the last **2 to 3 minutes**. Watch it closely, it **burns fast**. Feel free to switch the cheese: comté for more depth, cheddar for a bolder flavour. Lighter version: chicken breast instead of ham and skimmed milk.
